Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Oriental Woman's Club (OWC), located in Oriental, NC. From its beginning in 1916, the Club's aim has been to be an asset to our community and to work for its betterment in every way. Priorities have always been youth and education, health and welfare, community improvement and beautification.  These priorities are addressed directly, through such activities as our scholarship programs or road cleanups, and indirectly by raising funds for and awareness of other organizations in the community. OWC is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation and a member of the national and state General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Meetings are held from September through June on the first Tuesday of the month from September through May, beginning with a social gathering at 1, and meeting at 1:30pm. A June potluck luncheon celebrating scholarship winners is held on the first Tuesday at 11:30am. All meetings are held at the Oriental Woman's Club building at 1007 Gilgo Road. Meetings and membership are open to the public. Contact Jean Chastang, President, chastang45@gmail.com for more information.

President Jean Chastang's Fall 2010 Welcome Message

I sincerely hope that all of you have had a wonderful summer and will now begin to look forward to continuing community service through your club work at OWC.

As you know we finished up OWC renovations this year with new lights and ceiling fans. Thanks so much to Bev Fiske for her diligence to this project and to Linda Parker who oversaw the new wall covering installation. think we can all be very proud of the fresh new look of our building.

We can also be proud of our accomplishments at the local, district, and state levels and especially proud of Connie Wilkinson who was awarded “Clubwoman of the Year.”

The Summer Workshop at Campbell University was an amazing day. We learned a lot and have a lot to share with you about programs and projects, etc. My thanks to those who attended along with me, Suzanne Jantzen, Susan Whatley, Sharon Morgan and Carol McAdoo. We had a great time and learned a lot.

I hope to see you all at the September 7 general meeting. Refreshments and socializing will begin at 1 p.m. with the meeting starting at 1:30 p.m. We will be collecting items for Operation Smile Bags that were made over the summer. Thanks to Bev Fiske and her committee, Susan Whatley, Sharon Brietling, Nancy Hill, Carol McAdoo and me for the bags we will fill with the items you donate. We ask that you bring the following to this meeting:

·         A new wash cloth
·         An 8 pack box of crayons
·         A sample size toothpaste (not expired)
·         A hotel size bar of soap

Sally Bellangia, our International Outreach Program Chairman will present our program at this meeting.

We will also be having a bakeless bake sale at the Sept. meeting. You are invited to NOT bake a cake, pie, cookies, or brownies.  You do NOT have to find the recipe.  You do NOT have to shop for the ingredients. You do NOT have to mix.  You do NOT have to cook.  You do NOT have to cut and wrap.  You do NOT have to wash dishes and clean up your kitchen.  You do NOT have to deliver the baked product.  You do NOT have to stand in the heat/cold/rain to sell the baked product. You can simply write a check or donate cash. We will pass around a collection bowl for you to drop in your “ingredients.”

September is also the time when we elect our Nominating Committee and distribute the straw ballot for nominees for Officers and Program Chairmen.  Please think about who you want to lead our club in 2011 and come prepared to cast your ballot.

As a reminder, there will be a Scrapbook meeting Sept. 15, 10 a.m. at the clubhouse.

I would also like to remind you that GFWC-NC is holding a golf tournament on September 30, 2010 at the Riverwood Golf Club just outside Clayton.  Proceeds from this tournament support literacy programs and teaching scholarships for rising Juniors in a four year college or university in NC.  Tournament participation deadline is Sept. 26.  If you are a golfer and would like to try this course, it is an excellent opportunity to help support the literacy project and scholarship of the new administration for GFWC-NC.  Forms are available from me or you can register online at www.gfwcnc.org

Our Ways & Means quilt, made by Sharon Breitling and Connie Wilkinson is beautiful and one that we will all want to have in our homes.  You should have already received your tickets.  If not, they are at the membership table.  Be sure to pick them up as you get your name tag.  Please return your stubs and money to me.  If you need more tickets, let me know.

We will also be kicking off a new fundraiser, “Meal of the Month” for 2011.  Suzanne Mendell will chair this event and will have tickets available shortly.

There will be a Fine Arts & Crafts Show combined with a “Cookies by the Pound” sale at the clubhouse on November 6 chaired by Marlene Miller.  If you have a special craft and are interested in participating as a vendor, please see Marlene.

The next Soup and Games will be October 14, chaired by Harriet Scharr.  Come out and enjoy a delicious lunch, play some games and support our scholarship fundraiser.  The October 5 general meeting with be hosted by Jan Nixon and the Conservation Program. The November 2 meeting will be hosted by Phyllis Lane and the Education Program and December 7 will be our installation of officers and holiday luncheon.  The quilt drawing & drawing for “Meal of the Month” will, of course, take place at this luncheon and we will pass the gavel to our 2011 President, Sharon Morgan.

Let’s continue to live by our Theme, Women Together-Making a Difference.  I thank you for your support and all the good things you do for OWC.

Sincerely,

Jean Chastang
OWC President
