Woman's Club

Activities 

In addition to raising money for donations to local fire departments, an indigent care medical clinic, and many other local non-profit organizations, the Oriental Woman's Club sponsors a number of service and special interest activities.   Activities are managed by the department and committee chairs of the club.

Community Service

Adopt-A-Highway The club maintains a 2-mile stretch of NC Highway 55 through Oriental. 

Arts Festivals OWC sponsors local and statewide competitions for clubwomen and students in arts, crafts, drama, literature, music, needlework, photography, and public speaking. 

American Cancer Society  OWC's Relay for Life team raises money for cancer research, education, advocacy, and service as part of the spring county-wide fundraiser.

Caswell Center  This is an outreach project for the Center, located near Kinston, which serves the state's mentally challenged citizens.

Meals on Wheels OWC coordinates the delivery schedule for noontime meals to homebound residents of Oriental.  Meals are delivered 5 days a week.

Oriental Cemetary  The care of Silverbrook Road cemetery is the is the longest on-going community service project of the OWC.  It began as a special project in October 1922, and is now supported by family lot owner payments.

Scholarships  The Inez S. Hargrove and Frank and Violet Cathers Scholarships are awarded to a Pamlico County student each year.  In addition, the club sponsors a student in the competition for the statewide Sally Southall Cotten scholarship and the Mary K. Whitener Piano Scholarship.

Special Interest Groups

The Ladies of the Neuse (LON) are members of OWC whose home and career responsibilities keep them from thaking an active part in the Club's daytime activities.  The group meets at 7pm on the third Tuesday.  

The Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the clubhouse or other locations. A newsletter is published September through May.

The Bridge group includes members at all levels of expertise and meets to share knowledge of the game through play and discussion.

The WOOCHANG group (Women of Oriental Crafts, Handwork, And Needlework) sponsors craft and related workshops for the OWC.
